A considered approach to design within a sensitive landscape.

Making a small change to an existing property can require a careful and considered approach, particularly when the site is located within a highly designated area.

Our client approached us with proposals to introduce a new window to their barn conversion, which is located within a World Heritage Site, Conservation Area, Heritage Coast, Dark Skies area and National Landscape.

Due to the sensitive nature of the location, the application required a detailed understanding of the site constraints and the heritage considerations associated with the proposal.

To support the application, we prepared a Heritage Impact Assessment in house, incorporating this into a comprehensive Design and Access Statement. This provided an opportunity to clearly explain the design rationale behind the new window and demonstrate how the proposal had been carefully considered in relation to the surrounding environment.

By taking a sensitive and informed approach, we were able to demonstrate how the proposed change responded positively to the character of the existing property and its wider setting.

Our planning team regularly works on projects within highly designated areas, offering expert advice to help ensure proposals are policy compliant, appropriately justified and responsive to their unique surroundings.
