Grid Connection Reform and what it means for Renewable Energy Projects

The process for securing grid connections for renewable energy projects is undergoing a significant change. Our Planning Director, Liz Alexander, recently attended a seminar hosted by Landmark Chambers which explored the implications of the latest reforms and what they mean for developers moving forward.

Historically, grid connection applications operated on a first come, first served basis. Under this model, projects could secure a place in the connection queue even if they were at a very early stage of development.

The new approach places a far greater emphasis on whether a project is genuinely deliverable within defined timescales. Developers are now required to demonstrate meaningful progress and commit to a series of key milestones throughout the process.

These milestones include demonstrating appropriate progress through the planning system and confirming that the necessary land agreements are in place. Only projects that can clearly evidence they are realistic and deliverable will be able to progress through the connection process.

Missing deadlines now carries significant consequences. Applications for grid connections will only be accepted during two fixed submission windows each year, meaning projects that fail to meet the required milestones may face considerable delays.

As a result, planning permission and grid connection strategy must now be considered together from the earliest stages of a project. Treating them as separate processes is increasingly risky under the new system.

At Laurence Associates, our team has extensive experience supporting large scale renewable energy developments through the planning process. This includes coordinating multidisciplinary technical teams, managing complex planning submissions and preparing Environmental Statements where required.

By understanding the interaction between planning progress, project delivery and grid connection requirements, we can help developers prepare robust and realistic applications that align with the new framework.

Our experience allows us to advise on practical timescales, reduce project risk and ensure submissions are both technically strong and deliverable.

If you are bringing forward a renewable energy project and need advice on planning strategy, project coordination or Environmental Statement preparation, our team would be pleased to discuss your project and help you navigate the evolving grid connection process.
