Exploring Contemporary Materials and Colour in Cornish Architecture
Laurence Associates continues to explore how contemporary architecture can evolve through thoughtful use of materials and colour. Rather than relying solely on traditional Cornish palettes, this approach embraces a wider spectrum of possibilities that still respond to landscape, light and context.
This one storey longhouse demonstrates how a more expressive material approach can be introduced into a rural setting. White lime rendered walls provide a clean and grounded base, while the orange corrugated metal roof introduces a bold contrasting tone that shifts perception of what is typically expected in Cornish architecture.
The surrounding meadow landscape, mature trees and open skies provide a soft natural backdrop that allows the building to sit confidently within its environment. Full height glazing and slim framed sliding doors strengthen the connection between inside and outside, encouraging natural light and views to become part of the everyday experience.
By stepping beyond conventional colour schemes, this project highlights how material and tonal choices can be used to enhance rather than restrict architectural design. The result is a home that feels both contemporary and rooted, offering a balance between individuality and sensitivity to place.
Laurence Associates continues to support clients who are interested in exploring alternative material directions, helping them translate ambitious ideas into carefully considered architectural solutions.
