Supporting the Interior Design Journey Through Architecture

Supporting the Interior Design Journey Through Architecture

Interior spaces are where architecture begins to feel like home. While the early stages of a project establish the building’s form and structure, it is through the development of interior spaces that the character and atmosphere of a home truly emerge.

At Laurence Associates, our architectural process is designed to support this transition. Although we are not interior designers, our work during the early design stages often provides the foundation that helps guide interior design decisions with clarity and confidence.

Establishing the Architectural Framework

In the initial stages of a project, we define the architectural direction through massing, spatial planning and structural organisation. These decisions shape how the building sits within its setting and how spaces are arranged internally.

However, architecture does not exist independently from the interior. Window positions, ceiling heights, circulation routes and proportions all influence how interior spaces function and feel. Recognising this relationship allows the architecture and interiors to develop together rather than as separate ideas.

Developing Interior Spaces During Stage 2

During our Stage 2 design packages, we work closely with clients and often alongside an appointed interior designer to develop the information needed to bring the interior vision to life while maintaining the integrity of the architectural concept.

Using the base three-dimensional model created during earlier stages, we can explore how interior elements interact with the architecture of the building. This includes testing materials, finishes, lighting layouts, joinery arrangements and circulation routes in relation to the building’s form, proportions and openings.

By reviewing these elements early in the design process, clients can understand how their interior choices influence the overall spatial experience of the home.

Visualising Design Decisions Before Construction

One of the key benefits of the digital design process is the ability to visualise spaces long before construction begins. The three-dimensional model allows us to produce interior views that help clients explore ideas and compare options.

From daylight studies to material and colour testing, these visualisations help communicate how different design decisions will affect the atmosphere and functionality of the space. They also create a shared reference point between the client, architect and interior designer, supporting clear communication throughout the design process.

Coordinating Architectural and Interior Details

Collaboration sits at the heart of this stage. By working closely with clients and supporting interior designers where involved, we help coordinate the architectural and interior elements that contribute to a cohesive design.

This often includes aligning joinery lines with window positions, reviewing junctions and set outs, and ensuring that finishes transition cleanly from one space to another. Attention to these details helps ensure the interior feels resolved and integrated rather than separate from the architecture.

Creating Interiors That Belong to the Architecture

Our aim is always to support the creation of interiors that feel thoughtful, practical and personal to the client while remaining closely connected to the architecture of the building.

When architectural design and interior development evolve together, the result is a home where the exterior form, spatial layout and interior character work as a unified whole.

Discuss Your Project With Us

If you are planning a new home, extension or renovation and would like to explore how architectural design can support both the structure and the interior development of your project, our team would be happy to help.

Through our collaborative design process and detailed visual studies, we help clients understand their spaces clearly and make confident decisions before construction begins.
