Meneage Street Surgery
Our client was awarded grant funding to extend and improve the Meneage Street doctors’ surgery in Helston, at the northern end of Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula.
We were instructed to lead the entire project, from obtaining planning consent, preparation of construction drawings, specifications, and schedule of works, through to the tender process and completion of the build.
Our brief was to provide a self-contained surgery extension, to include GP consulting and treatment rooms and a surgical area for minor procedures.
The only space available for the expansion was a small rear unused raised courtyard, and it was a challenge to meet the brief within such a confined space. Our job was further complicated because several utility services ran underneath the area.
We designed a single storey flat-roofed extension with a Sarnafil single-ply membrane which satisfied both the extension and upgrade requirements. We recommended the use of pile foundations to overcome issues with poor ground stability, and upgraded the existing air conditioning and ventilation systems.
Planning permission was granted followed closely by building regulation approval. The project went out to tender, and we administered the contract stage with site supervision. The scheme was completed within budget.
